On Tuesday, Speaker Mike Johnson and House Republican leaders refused Democratic requests to swear in Rep.-elect Adelita Grijalva during a brief pro forma session held at noon. Rep. Morgan Griffith presided, gavels out the session, and did not administer the oath to Grijalva while declining to recognize Democrats calling for votes on a Democratic proposal to keep the government open.
Republican leadership stated Grijalva will be sworn in when the House returns to regular session, currently scheduled for Oct. 7, citing receipt of required state paperwork and what they described as standard practice. Grijalva said she had no direct communication from the Speakerâs office about timing and pointed to Florida Republicans being sworn in during a pro forma session earlier this year.
The timing matters for a discharge petition led by Reps. Thomas Massie and Ro Khanna to force a vote on legislation to release Epstein-related files; it is one signature short of 218, and Grijalva has said she will sign once sworn in.
