On Friday, Trump administration officials started reversing termination notices that had been issued about 24 hours earlier to more than 300 employees at the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), as first reported by CNN. Sources told CNN that those directing the firings appeared unaware the NNSA manages the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile. NNSA employs about 1,800 people.

Acting administrator Teresa Robbins said she had been instructed to rescind the terminations of probationary employees and restore their access to internal networks and IT services. Energy Department officials stipulated that listed reasons for the firings were poor performance. Two HR administrators resigned in protest on Friday.

The Energy Department said it would continue its mission related to nuclear deterrence, modernization and stewardship of the atomic weapons enterprise, and nonproliferation. The same day saw additional layoffs reported across the federal government, including at the Environmental Protection Agency, the Agriculture Department, and the U.S. DOGE Service.
