President Donald Trump held the first Cabinet meeting of his second term on Wednesday, Feb. 26. After the meeting ended and reporters began leaving the room, a live microphone captured Trump addressing Fox & Friends co-host Lawrence Jones.
The White Houseâs official live stream cut off before the exchange, but The Associated Press broadcast a separate live stream that continued and captured Trump telling Jones, âLawrence, say we did a great job, please. Okay? Say it was unbelievable.â
The meeting followed an administration announcement that the White House would determine the membership of the White House press pool. New outlets, including Newsmax and Blaze Media, were included at the Cabinet meeting. The Associated Press was not present in the room amid a dispute over the phrase âGulf of America.â
On Feb. 25, press secretary Karoline Leavitt said pool selection would no longer be made by the White House Correspondents' Association. WHCA president Eugene Daniels later wrote that the administration had not discussed the change with the organization and that the board would not assist a takeover of independent press coverage.
