Research from the Reuters Institute found that social media and video networks have become the main source of news in the United States. The survey reported that 54% of people get news from platforms such as Facebook, X, and YouTube, compared with 50% from TV and 48% from news sites and apps.
The report said the rise of social video and personality-driven news is happening faster in the US than elsewhere. It identified podcaster Joe Rogan as the most widely seen personality, with 22% of the US population saying they encountered his news or commentary in the prior week.
The institute also documented a trend of politicians choosing appearances with sympathetic online hosts rather than mainstream interviewers. It stated that populist politicians are increasingly bypassing traditional journalism in favor of friendly partisan media, personalities, and influencers who often receive special access and rarely ask difficult questions, with many implicated in spreading false narratives.
Globally, 47% of respondents named online influencers and personalities as major sources of false or misleading information, level with politicians. The report also found X usage for news is stable or increasing across many markets, with the largest uplift in the US since Elon Muskâs 2022 takeover.
